Who is the NCMG?

We are a team of national organisations that has reviewed cat management in New Zealand. Our National Cat Management Strategy Report contains recommendations including companion cat desexing, microchipping with registration, and cats being kept safe and happy at home.

About

The National Cat Management Group (NCMG), formed in November 2014, is a group of seven national organisations working together to advocate for responsible and humane cat management in New Zealand. Cats' welfare must be balanced with protection of our natives species.

The NCMG supports responsible cat management and recognises the many challenges associated with management of companion, stray and feral cats. Effective, humane cat management is challenging due to a lack of reliable data on cat numbers, management methods, and the varied and often highly emotive nature of conversations about cats.

The NCMG emphasises the need for collaboration across various organisations. Different solutions are needed for different situations - these must guide future decisions on humane and effective cat management in New Zealand, and biodiversity protection.

Members

Membership has varied since establishment of the NCMG in 2014. In 2025, the NCMG consists of seven national organisations that have an interest in cat management, as well as the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) as an observer member, and the Department of Conservation as a technical advisory member.
